Downtown is the safe, vibrant, historic center of St. George, offering unique employment, education, entertainment, and entrepreneurship opportunities. Downtown welcomes all community members to gather and thrive, consistent with its primary roles as the seat of government, home to residents in all stages of life, and showcase of local history, arts, and culture.
To achieve a Thriving Downtown, we will advance the following strategies, in alignment with the Downtown Area Plan (link to DAP):
Identify appropriate locations within Downtown to invite growth and revitalization
Recognize and develop the distinctive and varied character of the downtown neighborhoods and activity centers
Invest in public infrastructure and expand capacity Downtown to accommodate the desired growth potential
Allow for a healthy mix of non-residential, single-family residential, and multi-family residential uses to provide the foundation for long-term vitality in Downtown
Update the Downtown zoning to encourage development and align with plan goals
Expand housing supply and residents living Downtown to support businesses, accommodate growth, and advance the Moderate Income Housing Plan (rd)
Offer housing for residents at all ages and stages of life
Maintain and develop safe and family-friendly neighborhoods
Enhance complete neighborhoods with a range of convenient amenities and services for daily living such as parks, transit, and convenience retail
Retain City facilities and services Downtown and encourage other governing agencies (County, State, Regional, Federal, etc.) to do so
Identify and advance a distinctive niche for Downtown within the network of commercial and employment nodes citywide
Promote and support a strong cluster of local and independent businesses in Downtown
Use placemaking to enhance the sense of arrival and positive experience of being in the Downtown Arts District
Enhance informal entertainment space Downtown that encourages patrons to increase visit duration and frequency
Continue to offer visitor services and facilities Downtown and harness visitor spending to support more diverse shopping and dining options
Retain, promote and protect historic assets and character
Enhance and expand placemaking and public art in the Downtown Arts District; expand the boundary to accommodate additional sites and venues
Continue to offer diverse community-wide events Downtown, inviting all members of the community to gather in keeping with a small town, connected community feeling
Prioritize the Downtown Arts District in allocating public funding for art and venues to concentrate a strong and vibrant arts cluster
